Academia Sinica Balanced Corpus of Modern Chinese

"Academia Sinica Balanced Corpus of Modern Chinese", or Sinica Corpus, is the first balanced Chinese Corpus with part-of-speech tagging and is designed to analyze modern Chinese. Texts are collected from different areas and classified according to five criteria: genre, style, mode, topic, and source. Sinica Corpus is developed and maintained by the Institute of Information Science and Chinese Knowledge and Information Processing (CKIP) group in Academia Sinica. The CKIP group is managed by Professors Keh-jiann Chen (Institute of Information Science) and Chu-Ren Huang (Institute of Linguistics). Since 1990, the CKIP group began collecting Chinese texts, and in 1991, funded by the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, the construction of Sinica Corpus began. The corpus is open to the research community through the Internet. The corpus (Sinica 3.0) was completed in 1997 with 5 million words. For more information, see CKIP Technical Report 95-02/98-04. Academia Sinica Bilingual Ontological Wordnet (Sinica BOW)

The Academia Sinica Bilingual Ontological Wordnet (Sinica BOW) integrates three resources: WordNet, English-Chinese Translation Equivalents Database (ECTED), and SUMO (Suggested Upper Merged Ontology). With the integration of these three key resources Sinica BOW functions both as an English-Chinese bilingual wordnet and a bilingual lexical access to SUMO and facilitates a combination of lexical, semantic, and ontological information. With its bilinguality and lemma-based merging of multiple resources, Sinica BOW allows the user to make queries using English or Chinese and to access WordNet and SUMO ontology using both words and conceptual nodes. Academia Sinica Tagged Corpus of Early Mandarin Chinese

The Academia Sinica Tagged Corpus of Early Mandarin Chinese is designed for historical linguistic research. The corpus contains texts in Early Mandarin Chinese which are chosen for their usefulness in grammatical and lexical studies, as well as an inspection program with keyword searching, statistics, and collocation functions. Each text in the corpus has been segmented into words, which are in turn given part-of-speech tagging. Now it already includes language materials of 10 classics, for example, Dream of the Red Chamber 紅樓夢, The Plum in the Golden Vase 金瓶梅, All Men are Brothers 水滸傳. The National Central Library holds rich collection of antique books which are more than 12,300 series of rare books, that is, near 126,000 volumes. Its rare book collection includes 153 scrolls of Tunhuang manuscripts, 175 series of Sung dynasty manuscripts, 6 series of Jin dynasty manuscripts, 272 series of Yuan dynasty manuscripts, more than 6,000 series of Ming dynasty manuscripts, near 3,000 hand-copied manuscripts, about 500 series of drafts and 500 series of commentaries. This collection of rare books is unique for the following reasons. It contains many selected collections of famous bibliophiles in history. It contains different editions of some famous works. It often has several copies of the same editions. It has rich collection of Ming literature and historical materials. Finally, it includes many writings that are not recorded in Qianqingtan Bibliography and the General Bibliography of the Complete Book Collection of the Four Repositories.

Archives and Linguistic Representations of Spoken Taiwan Mandarin

As part of the Language Archives Project (National Digital Archive Project) the main aim of the "Mandarin spoken corpora project" is to collect a wide variety of speech data of Taiwan Mandarin and to digitally archive the use of Taiwan Mandarin in audio and video data formats. The project consists of (1) speech data collection and processing, (2) toolkit and database development, (3) metadata management, (4) speech annotation design and (5) web query system construction. Funded by the Institute of Linguistics, the National Science Council and the National Digital Archives Project, this database contains three Mandarin spoken corpora, “Mandarin Topic-oriented Conversation Corpus” (MTCC), “Mandarin Conversational Dialogue Corpus” (MCDC) and “Mandarin Map Task Corpus” (MMTC). The annotation systems include “discourse annotation,” “detailed spontaneous speech phenomena” and “particular phonetic phenomena”. Created by the Academia Sinica 中央研究院 in Taiwan, this system aims to construct an integrated GIS-based application infrastructure allowing the integration of materials related to Chinese civilization during the imperial period (222 BCE – 1911 CE) in spatial and temporal frameworks. It allows individual researchers to download map layers and contribute their results to the database. Database of Han Dynasty Stone Relief Rubbings

The establishment of this digital database seeks to preserve the more than 1,500 Han Dynasty Relief Rubbings held by the Institute of History and Philology and to promote their use in academic research. The rubbings come from shrines and tombs of Shandong, Hunan, S-chuan, Jiang-su, etc. and contain information about mythologies, spirits, and legendary animals, as well as architecture, transportation, hunting and entertainment. Most of the rubbings were acquired from the time of the founding of the Institute in 1928 to the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 by fellows of the Institute, Fu Ssu-Nien, Syu Jhong-shu, Doung Zuo-bin, Lao Gan as well as by donation, exchange, purchase or field research. Many rubbings in the library are rare and are considered to be fine works of art and more complete than other illustrated catalogues published to date in Taiwan and abroad. Because many original sculptures were destroyed or disappeared after the Cultural Revolution in China, these historical rubbings are especially valuable to the study of the society, architecture and cultural life of the Han dynasty. Digital Archive of Bronze Rubbings

Since the establishment of the Institute of History & Philology, Mr. Fu Ssu Nien has diligently purchased and collected bronze rubbings in order to build a broad collection of research materials. As a result of his and others’ efforts to preserve these rubbings the Institute’s collection has increased both in quantity and quality. The largest public collections of rubbings of bronze objects are located in the Fu Ssu Nien Library (approximately 1,100 rubbings), the National Library in Taiwan (720 rubbings) and the Beijing Library (700 rubbings). Digitization of these materials and the creation of the database of bronze rubbings has allowed scholars to take advantage of this rich resource. Digital Archives of Bronze Images and Inscriptions

This database includes information on ancient bronze inscriptions, rubbings and bronze vessels and utensils from the latter half of the Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty and contains not only a word-by-word explanation of the bronze inscriptions but also basic information about and images of the bronze vessels, sketches of their contours, and images of the embellishments found in the bronze rubbings. The compilation of these images and inscriptions into a single database makes this a world-class database for research on bronze vessels and ancient bronze inscriptions and makes possible the research of ancient Chinese written language and history. Digital Archives Project for the Liao-Chin-Yuan Rubbings

Among the collections of the Fu-Ssu-Nien Library of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica is approximately 2,200 rubbings of the Liao, Chin and Yuan dynasties. The majority of the collection contains 1,400 Yuan rubbings (1260-1368) and also includes 160 Liao rubbings (907-1125), and 450 Chin rubbings (1115-1234). Fu Ssu-Nien library also holds only about 200 non-Han rubbings. Although many of the library's rubbings date from 946 to 1382 more exact dates are uncertain. The rubbings cover a variety of articles and topics including tomb inscriptions, carved scripture, statutes, poetry and lyrics, Daoism, Buddhism, imperial edicts, decrees, and laws. Because Qidan, Jurchen and Mongolian languages were all official languages during the Liao, Chin, and Yuan dynasties, in addition to the Han language, documents and literature from these dynasties were written in all four languages. Digitization of the NCL Rare Books Collection

To increase the scope of information available over the Internet and enhance preservation of the country's cultural assets, the NCL is participating in the National Digital Archives Plan by digitizing rare and valuable books. This work is helping industry, government, academia, and the research community, increasing public convenience, and boosting national competitiveness. The NCL collection contains a wealth of rare books, including over 12,300 works and close to 126,000 volumes. There are 155 handwritten works from Dunhuang, 175 Song-edition books, six Chin-edition books, 272 Yuan-edition books, over 6,000 Ming-edition books, close to 3,000 codices, and approximately 500 manuscripts and pijiao documents. The collection includes exquisite works from past book collectors, several different editions of the same work, many duplicates, and a vast array of Ming Dynasty literary collections and historical materials, including many rare items not listed in the Complete Collection in Four Treasuries. The NCL Rare Books Collection Digitization Subproject digitized approximately 6,000 important rare books in the NCL collection between 2001 and 2004. The NCL will continue to digitize rare books through 2006. Approximately 6,200 ink rubbings will be digitized as well.

Grand Secretariat Archives Project

The Grand Secretariat Archives Project, which was launched in 1981, contains approximately 310,000 items dating from the Ming dynasty to the late Qing dynasty and encompasses a variety of subjects. Much of the project’s early work focused on conservation and cataloging, and since 1996 digitization and metadata management has also been underway. Detailed metadata has been added to each document in order to provide file descriptions and searchable key words. The documents were also scanned, photographed, and stored digitally using the latest technology. The database, which has been available since March 2001, is an ongoing project and is updated constantly. Researchers, students, and the general public may browse through the table of contents free of charge, or search the complete database after registration. A collection of several thousand searchable Chinese texts, including classics, works of history, geography, and medicine, collected writings, novels, poetry, and drama. Searching: Texts may be searched and search results displayed in both simplified 简体字 and traditional characters 繁體字. Search results provide snippets of text; the relevant chapter 卷 may be viewed by clicking on the title 標題 link. Advanced search 高级检索 allows one to limit searches to a particular text or texts or to search within poetry only. Browsing: A table of contents organized by category is available on the left-hand menu and texts may be browsed from here. The list of titles indicates whether the text was digitized from a modern punctuated edition (通行本) or from an earlier version (e.g. 金阊童涌泉刊本). Texts must be navigated via the table of contents (you cannot click from chapter to chapter directly). Works browsed via the table of contents may only be available in simplified characters. Reference Tools: A character dictionary 國學字典, name dictionary 人名詞典 giving brief biographies of writers and scholars, and a title dictionary 書名詞典 with short abstracts of the works derived from the 四库总目提要 and other sources are provided.

Han Dynasty Wooden Slips Database

This database is responsible for the management and digitization of the Han Wooden Slips collected by the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica. These wooden slips were excavated from areas that were once the borders of the Han dynasty and are invaluable cultural artifacts that provide a vivid record of the military and legal systems, economic, religious, and educational practices, and daily life of the local military personnel and civilians from the middle and late Western Han to the early Eastern Han dynasties. Digitization of the wooden slip images began in the early 1990s at which time the infrared image system was established for the Wooden, Silk, Bronze and Stone Objects Database as well as the Supplement to the Han Dynasty Wooden Slips from Edsen-Gol. The digital archive project of the Han Wooden Slips in the Institute of History and Philology is now working on digitizing the wooden slip archive and arranging the structure of its metadata. This digital project will preserve these invaluable artifacts and allow users to browse digital images and the associated commentary. It is anticipated that this database will also create an inquiry system of Han dynasty wooden slips, incorporating the spatial and temporal information of the database with GIS. Texts may be searched or browsed. originally established as the Royal Archives of the Chosŏn Dynasty in 1776, provides digital images of 88 old books in full-text PDF files, which include Kuunmong 구운몽, Kyŏngguk Taejŏn 경국대전(經國大典), Koryŏsa 고려사(高麗史), Kukcho Pogam 국조보감(國朝寶鑑), Taedong Chiji 대동지지(大東地誌), Samguk Sagi 삼국사기(三國史記), and Hanjungrok 한중록(恨中錄). It offers more convenient access to digitized collections available either in full-text or as high-definition digital images. Digitized collections include old maps, books, documents, government records of the late Chosŏn dynasty and during Japanese rule, and historic documents of the Chosŏn dynasty such as Ilsŏngrok (일성록), Pibyŏnsa Tŭngrok (비변사 등록), and Ŭigwe (의궤). The database is easy to browse and provides sophisticated search functions.

The Ming Literature Database contains 17 precious anthologies of Ming writers and poets in the National Central Library; all of them are displayed in colourful electronic images. While users can find part of the database contents on the internet, on the Library's intranet they can view all of the electronic contents and search the database by book title, author, edition, chapter, preface and postscript author, etc. The rare and antique book collection of the National Central Library has the reputation of being one of the important resources for academic research among sinologists around the world because of its holding of more than 12,000 series of rare and antique books including publications, hand-written copies and rare drafts of the Sung, Yuan, Ming, and Chin dynasties across the fields of classics, history, philosophy and belles-lettres. While the collection of rare and antique books were transferred on microfilm at the readers’ convenience, in this information age all the contents of the book collection will be digitalised by photography, scanning and other computer technologies. Given that all the collection of books is now available on microfilm, we will digitalise only selected books in a series of special issues at the early stage of this project. This strategy is chosen because of its flexibility.

Searching is by keyword 不限欄位, name 姓名, alternate name 異名, native place 籍貫, and official title 職銜. A GIS component allows mapping of place names. National Central Library National Digital Archives Plan

The National Digital Archives Plan was approved at the 9th Electronics Information and Telecommunication Strategy (SRB) Conference of the Executive Yuan in July 1999 with the aim of building Internet content and preserving the cultural assets of Taiwan. This plan has been carried out by the National Science Council, with the National Central Library (NCL) and six other institutions selected as the first participating organizations. The NCL plays an important function in preserving rare books and promoting the intellectual heritage of the people of Taiwan. As a national academic library, NCL has endeavored to maintain and build its rare book collection. One of the most pressing tasks facing the library today is to find ways to use digital technology to preserve these precious cultural archives. Local documents serve the important roles of preserving local culture and historical data, while improving local understanding, providing a native learning resource, and building local awareness. These functions can be even better served by making these resources available to the public in digital form over the Internet. Periodicals and newspapers are the most rapid media for conveying information and the results of research developments. They are also the most important media of recording recent developments in the humanities, social sciences and technology fields, making them the most frequently sought materials by readers across a broad spectrum of topics and languages. In the production of electronic publications, therefore, top priority should be given to periodicals and newspapers. In America, many electronic library plans aimed at digitizing periodicals, such as TULIP, CORE Project, and CIC Journal, have been setting the pace in the digitalization of full-text periodical content and in promoting online access to such content.

Retrieval System of Han Dynasty Wooden Slips from Edsengol

This system, which is a collaborative project between the Institute of History and Philology and the Computing Centre at Academia Sinica, works as a search tool for historical sites in Edsen-Gol from which the Institute's Han Dynasty wooden slips were excavated. Users can compare the spatial and temporal information on the historical maps of Liang Chou Cishibu of the two Han Dynasties with the maps of modern China by overlapping maps. This website also uses maps and menus to link to the Han wooden slip digital archive database at http://140.109.18.243/woodslip_public/System/Main.htm. The Rubbings Data collection of the Institute of History and Philology contains approximately 40,000 rubbings acquired since 1928 through purchase or donation. The collection consists of rubbings of oracle bones (excavated in Anyang, Henan province), bronze, tombstone stelae, brick reliefs, Buddhist stone sculptures and inscriptions, pottery and seals. The collection also includes the Han wooden slips, excavated at Edsen-Gol, Inner Mongolia, and dozens of Han-Chin slips from the Lop-nor area. Under the direction of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica this website is part of the National Digital Archives Program and contains digitized historic ethnological materials of images, documents and artifacts collected by the Institute's research fellows. It is hoped that this project will bridge current and previous studies of minority peoples in southwestern China and includes a section of China's Peripheries Reconstructed, which highlights ethnographic data collected more than 60 years ago by Institute researchers in the remote areas of southwestern China.
